Description
No. 36 High Street is a house in a row, built in the early 19th century. It features Flemish bond brickwork, with the roof not visible behind the parapet. This narrow-frontage building is four stories high and has two windows. The upper windows are wide 12-pane sashes above 16-pane sashes, all with brick voussoirs and a fluted keystone, complete with a cornice and stone cills. The ground floor has a full-width late 19th-century pilaster shop front, which includes consoles supporting a deep fascia with a moulded cornice and panelled stall-risers. The central entrance consists of panelled and glazed doors set well back from the front. The coped parapet extends to the sides of the building. The interior was not inspected. It appears that the building underwent a complete rebuild in the early 19th century, and it was also being reconstructed behind the facade in 1971, as noted in the previous survey. The ground floor does not retain any early features.
