Description
No. 38 High Street is a house in a row, featuring a late 18th-century front that likely incorporates a main structure from the 16th century. The building is constructed with Flemish bond brickwork and has a tile roof with brick stacks. The front range follows a side-entry parallel plan and has a high parapet that covers a steep-pitched roof aligned with the street. This roof appears to be continuous with the adjoining property, No. 37, and there is a large ridge stack that may be shared between the two buildings.
To the right, there is a throughway, and evidence suggests that the first floor was once jettied. The house stands three storeys tall with an attic and features three windows. The windows are 4-pane sashes, adorned with brick voussoirs and a fluted keystone topped with a cornice. The painted ground floor includes, on the left, a 19th-century pilaster shop front with a deep fascia, and on the right, a six-panel fielded door set in a fluted Doric pilaster doorcase. This doorcase is topped with an open moulded pediment that has an arch, and the door itself is notably broad, with panelled reveals and modified Greek key embellishments, along with a scalloped underside to the pediment.
Inside the stone-flagged throughway, there is heavy framing supported by very large braces. Approximately one meter back from the street front, a chamfered beam rests on a very large post, featuring a bracket that indicates the former jetty. Additionally, there is another chamfered stopped beam located about halfway through the passage. The interior has not been inspected.
