Description

Vineyard Bridge is a road bridge over a stream, built in 1891 by architect J. Drayton Wyatt and mason John Oakey. It is constructed from ashlar or rock-faced limestone and features a single segmental span of approximately 6.5 meters. The arch is made of brick and is adorned with voussoirs and a dropped central keystone. The bridge has a deep parapet with a wave-mould weathered top and edge mouldings, framed by piers that extend down and are topped with pyramidal cappings. The central pier includes a raised pyramidal panel mould, while the plain piers extend beyond the central section. On the east side, the parapet wall, made of rock-faced stone with a plain weathered capping, extends to a small iron gate next to No 14, Vineyard Street. The total length of the walls is about 25 meters, and the road width between the parapets is approximately 6.5 meters. This bridge represents the last building completed by Wyatt before his death in 1891 and is a notable example of John Oakey's work, who was employed by Emma Dent at Sudeley Castle. Vineyard Bridge provides access from the main thoroughfare of Winchcombe, via Vineyard Street, to one of the principal gatehouse entrances to Sudeley Castle, located in the adjoining parish.
