Description
Two gazebos with a linking terrace, built around 1850 by Lewis Vulliamy for W.J. Phelps, are located approximately 100 meters northeast of Chestal House. Constructed from ashlar marlstone with limestone dressings and topped with a stone slate roof, these structures are designed in the Gothic Revival style. The gazebos face each other along the length of the terrace and are connected by a backing wall. Each gazebo features a large central opening with pierced stonework above, which includes a gable with a large trefoil and an oculus. There are plain pilasters on either side of the opening, each with a round-ended recessed panel between them. The pilasters are capped with ball finials, and a continuous moulded cornice runs along the parapet. The front and side gables of the parapet are adorned with pyramidal spear stone finials. On the garden side of each gazebo, there is a trefoil-headed lancet, and a round-arched doorway with a four-panel door opens through the backing wall from within each gazebo. The linking marlstone wall is accented by limestone piers topped with pyramid spear stone finials, many of which were missing during the survey in August 1985. The terrace dwarf wall features some tufa stone on its front face. This site is an exotic example of early Victorian Gothic Revival architecture. Chestal House itself is situated in Dursley Civil Parish.
