Description
Halesmead is a detached house located on Wragg Castle Lane in Pitchcombe. It dates from the early to mid-17th century and underwent extensive alterations in the early 19th century. An addition was made in the early 20th century by the architect Edwin Lutyens for Miss Mayer. The building is constructed from random and coursed rubble limestone, with ashlar chimneys and a stone slate roof.
The house is two stories high with an attic and features a two-story rear wing. The front of the house has three windows, all of which are 16-pane sashes set in chamfered surrounds. The central doorway is framed by Regency architraves and has a moulded five-panel door, topped by a gabled decorative timber porch. There are two gabled dormers with small-paned timber casements mounted on the eaves. The gable end chimneys have been reduced in height and have plain caps. To the right, there is a single-storey addition by Lutyens, which includes a continuous set of small-paned timber casements and a chimney with a moulded cap on the southeast gable end, along with off-centre small-paned glazed doors.
At the rear, the two-story wing features 20th-century casements, and a lower parallel-roofed range has been added to the back of the front range. Inside, there is a large fireplace in one room with monolithic jamb slabs. Although the spiral staircase has been removed, the alcove remains. The Lutyens room boasts a high ceiling with plaster mouldings and a stone fireplace with a decorative edge to the mantel shelf.
