Description

The Eagle is a former inn that has been converted into a detached house. It dates from the mid 17th century, with additions made in the early to mid 18th century. The building is constructed from random and coursed rubble limestone, featuring rendered chimneys and a stone slate roof. It is two stories tall with an attic and has an L-shaped plan.

On the west side, which faces the road, there is a gabled wing added centrally to the rear of the main north-south range. The gable end has a single-window opening, while the ground floor features a three-light window in a small area with iron railings. The upper floor has a two-light window, and all windows are recessed chamfered mullioned casements. To the left of the wing, the main range has a three-light window on the ground floor and a two-light window above. A central chimney with a moulded cap is mounted on the ridge.

At the south end, there is a single-window opening in the gable end, with the ground floor rebuilt in the 20th century, featuring a three-light casement and a doorway to the left, both under a drip course. The upper floor has a three-light window and a two-light window in the attic, both with hoodmoulds. The north end features an attic casement with a timber lintel above a lean-to that is attached to the gable end. The wing to the left has two-light casements on each floor. The east side has a central gable with mullioned fenestration below, and the north wing projects forward to the right.

The Eagle became a coaching inn when the adjacent Cheltenham-Bath turnpike road was constructed.
