Description
The Former Harbourmaster's House is a detached building located at the western end of the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal, dating from the early 19th century. It is possibly designed by Robert Mylne, the first principal engineer for the Gloucester and Berkeley Canal Company. The house features a rendered exterior and a bitumenised hipped slate roof, with two rebuilt brick stacks at the rear.
The structure is a square, two-storey range, with a single-storey 20th-century addition to the left that is not of special interest. It has three windows, consisting of 16/12/16-pane sashes set in plain reveals. On the ground floor, there are two 16-pane sashes flanking a central projecting portico. This portico is supported by two square corner piers and two widely spaced fluted Doric columns, topped with a shallow pediment that has a simple moulded edge. Behind the portico is a doorcase with a moulded frame and a flush panel door, which may conceal an original panelled door beneath.
This house is situated at the westernmost end of the Old Dock and is part of a series of buildings along the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal that feature the classical Doric portico motif, likely influenced by designs from Thomas Telford.
