Description
Nos 4 and 4 Springhill Cottages are two adjoining cottages built in three stages, with a conversion in the 20th century. The westernmost part is possibly from the late 15th century, while the central section dates to the 16th century. The cottages feature square panel timber framing that is partly faced with brick on a stone plinth. The eastern end, from the early 17th century, is roughcast-faced with Tudor roses impressed into the roughcast, set on a brick plinth. The cottages have a mainly tiled roof, with slates on the rear of the west end, and rebuilt brick stacks. They form a single continuous range of one storey and an attic.
The ground floor on the south side has cambered openings and two rebuilt gabled brick porches. On the first floor, there are two-light wood mullion windows with iron bars in each light, a large three-light gable window at the eaves to the left, and a smaller two-light window through the eaves to the right. The east end features a full dormer with two-light casement windows with cambered heads on both the south and north sides. The timber-framed section is exposed in the centre of the rear elevation and throughout the interior of the centre and west end, showing remains of daub and wattle walls, along with some turned wood ventilating panels flanking a shallow and narrow three-centred arched doorway.
