Description
Thirteen unidentified monuments are located about 7 meters north of the porch in the churchyard of the Church of St. Peter in Haresfield. This group includes a chest and pedestal tomb, a line of eight headstones running north from the west end of the chest tomb, and three coffin tombs to the east of the pedestal tomb. All are made of limestone.
The chest tomb, which is unidentified and dates from the 1790s, features a flat top, a moulded plinth and capping on the base, gadrooned quarter balusters, and large ovals on the sides with a moulded edge. The south end displays draped leaves, while the west end has a recessed high relief of a weeping lady and the east end features an urn.
The headstones, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, all have a cherub's head in a carved surround and vary in size. The fifth headstone in the line from the south is noted as not being of special interest.
The pedestal tomb, dating from the late 18th century, has a curved pyramidal cap with a missing finial, moulded capping, a tall moulded plinth, and a frieze with reeded sections. Each face has tombstone-shaped panels that are very eroded and partially overgrown as of January 1986.
The coffin tombs, possibly from the late 16th to early 17th century, include two very plain examples, with the northernmost being triangular in section and featuring a thick low headstone with a cross in relief. These are arranged in a row from north to south.
