Description
The barn and cartshed at Priory Farm, located approximately 70 meters southwest of Priory House, is a structure that dates back to the 13th or 14th century, with 17th century and later additions. It is constructed from random rubble and dressed limestone, featuring roughcast render and a stone slate roof, along with corrugated asbestos and pantile roofs on the lean-to sections.
The barn consists of six or seven bays and includes an east porch and lean-to additions, with a large cartshed at the south end. The east side features a central gabled porch with a timber lintel over the doorway, which is rendered and has weatherboarding in the apex that contains pigeon holes. There is a gabled lantern for the columbarium with horizontal openings. To the right of the porch is an open-fronted lean-to supported by timber posts, while a concrete block lean-to is to the left. The open end of the cartshed on the left has a high hipped roof.
The north end of the barn has a parapet gable with a trefoil-enriched saddle stone and a large 14th century opening with Decorated tracery, although the mullion is missing. Below this is a round-arched opening that is blocked, with a small trefoil-headed recess to the left. The south parapet gable end of the barn features a finely carved saddle stone. On the west side, there is a central doorway with a timber lintel and slit vents on either side. The end of the cartshed projects to the right and has large plank doors with a timber lintel. The interior was not accessible for inspection at the time of the survey in November 1985. This structure is part of the Priory Farm grouping, which includes the nearby church.
