Description
Christ Church, also known as the Baptist-Methodist United Reform Church, is located at 6 Newmarket Road. This building was moved to its current site in 1881 and was originally known as Shortwood Chapel. It features a large pedimented gable at the front in a classical style and stands two storeys tall. The structure is made of coursed and dressed rubble with ashlar dressings.
The facade includes four pilasters with fluted capping and a modillion cornice. The pediment is adorned with an arched window at the center of the first floor, which has sub-Venetian tracery. The building has three bays with segment-headed windows that have marginal glazing and architraves. The ground floor windows are topped with cornices, while the first floor has a cill band.
There is an arched entrance with panelled spandrels and a recess for the doorway. The interior is described as a seven bay vessel. To the left of the entrance, there is a tablet inscribed with the chapel's history, noting its original establishment in 1716 at Shortwood.
