Description
This is a memorial direction post with a drinking fountain, built in 1897 for Charles Henry Hooper. The post is made of limestone and stands on a red sandstone base, featuring cast iron arms. It is designed in the shape of a churchyard cross, with a cross gabled head topped by a crown. Two direction arms attached to the head indicate 'GLOUCESTER/BRISTOL' and 'STONEHOUSE/STROUD'. There was a third arm, now removed, which likely read 'FROCESTER/TETBURY'. Each arm has a scrolled underside bracket and an end. The octagonal post has a moulded square base with recessed inscription panels on three sides that read: 'VICTORIA/DG REG/1837', 'VICTORIA/DG REG/1897', and 'XEMORIAL/ANNO LX'. There is a small drinking fountain, now eroded, in a recess on the fourth side, which has a shell hood. This post was erected to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee and is located at the center of a 20th-century traffic island.
