Description

Nos 1, 2, and 3 The Cross is a detached house that has been divided into three cottages. It dates from the late 17th century and was faced in brick, probably in the late 18th or early 19th century. The building features square panel timber-framing with brick infill, which is exposed on three sides of No 1, while the south side is completely faced in brick. No 1 has a double Roman tile roof on the cross wing at the east side, which has a steep pitch and was likely originally thatched. The remainder of the building has a slate roof with a lower pitch, featuring a large brick ridge stack and a small brick end stack. Originally, the structure had an L-plan layout with two storeys and an attic in the gable ends of the cross wing. There are several small rear additions from the 20th century on the north side, which are not of special interest.

The east side of No 1 has scattered mostly 20th-century windows, while the south gable end features cambered brick heads and also has 20th-century windows. Nos 2 and 3 each have small canted bays on the ground floor of the south front, with two-light windows above. No 2 has a large chamfered and stopped beam and joists on the ground floor. No 3 is not accessible but may also contain similar beams and internal timber framing. The south gable end of No 1 may contain fragments of cruck construction.
