Description

This is a small house that has been significantly enlarged over time. The original structure dates to the 17th or 18th century, with substantial alterations and additions in 1862 by Benjamin Bucknall for William Leigh, and a further addition around 1873. It is constructed of random rubble and coursed, squared limestone, with some roughcast rendering, ashlar chimneys, and a stone and Welsh slate roof. The house is in a High Victorian Gothic style.

The north front is dominated by the main part of the house, featuring two full gabled sections with kneelers and finials. To the right is a projecting two-storey porch with an attic. It has a moulded Tudor arched doorway, an upper floor casement window with mullions and transoms, an attic cross window, a quatrefoil gable vent, and diagonal offset corner buttresses. There are two eaves-mounted chimneys on the west side, with diagonally-set shafts and moulded caps. To the left is a full gable with a large, rectangular, single-storey bay window, topped with a hipped coped top and a Tudor arched mullioned and transomed casement. The roughcast rendered portion of the elevation above has a single window. A projecting chimney is located above this. A 20th-century fire escape stair is also present. A lower range is attached to the west end, including a gabled cross wing and a game house.

The south side of the main house features two full gabled sections with mullioned or mullioned and transomed casement windows. To the right gable is a two-storey canted bay window. Quatrefoil gable vents are also present. A projecting stair tower with a hipped roof and a tall, mullioned and transomed stairlight with Tudor arched heads is centrally positioned. To the right is a two-storey flat-roofed section with a coped parapet, both features being part of a second enlargement, which partly obscures the central full gable with a chimney having three diagonal shafts. A two-storey rectangular bay window, featuring mullioned and transomed windows and a crenellated parapet set at 45 degrees, is located on the south-east corner. The lower section to the left has two half gables. A cross wing is present at the west end.

Inside, numerous contemporary features remain, including various stone fireplaces, one adorned with the monograms of the Leigh family. Bold rere-arches are present to all bay windows, along with panelled doors and other fittings.

Originally a small cottage, the house was considerably enlarged to serve as a temporary residence for William Leigh while he built The Mansion in Woodchester. It was further enlarged by Leigh's son after Leigh’s death in 1873, following the abandonment of further construction work on The Mansion.
