Description

A group of three memorials, two dedicated to the Powell family and one to Knight, is located approximately 15 to 20 meters southwest of the porch door at the Church of St Giles in Uley. The tombs are arranged in a north-south line, with the northernmost described first.

The first memorial is a tall chest tomb from the late 18th century, made of sandstone. It features a moulded top, a part sunk cavetto base, and a frieze with elliptical panels adorned with trophies on the east and west sides, as well as draped curtains on the north and south. The inscriptions include the name SARAH POWELL, though the dates are not decipherable.

The second memorial is a chest tomb from the mid to late 18th century, also made of sandstone. It has a moulded top, friezed ends with a shield, and plain panels on the north and south sides. The part sunk base is not visible. This tomb is inscribed with the name POWELL and the year 1792, but it likely has an earlier design.

The third memorial is a tall chest tomb from the late 18th century, constructed of limestone on a sandstone base. It features a heavy moulded top, a cyma base on a plinth, and a wreath of leaves with a pair of slender horns tied at the center as relief modelling on the ends. The raised elliptical inscription panels include the name KNIGHT, but no date is legible. This tomb is located about 2 meters south of the Powell memorial from 1792.
