Description
Ivy Grove is a former detached house, now part of a school, dating from the early to mid-17th century with 19th-century alterations. The building is constructed of random rubble limestone, mostly covered in roughcast render, with ashlar dressings and chimneys, and has a concrete plain tile roof. It is designed in an L-plan, with two storeys and an attic, featuring a two-storey porch on the north side.
On the south side, the wing has a roll-moulded parapet gable end with an openwork finial that projects forward to the right. This side includes single-window recessed cavetto mullioned casement windows with hoodmoulds, arranged as 2 + 2-light on the ground floor, 3-light on the upper floor, and 2-light in the attic. The wing has irregularly coursed quoins and single 2-light casements on its west side. There is a 20th-century angled porch at the junction with the south-facing elevation, featuring single-window fenestration to the left, a 5-light recessed cavetto mullioned window with a hoodmould on the ground floor, a 3-light window on the upper floor, and a 2-light window in the full attic gable, both of which are plain chamfered without hoods.
On the east side, the roll-moulded parapet gable with an openwork finial forms the gable end of the main range, with the side of the front wing extending to the left. This side also has recessed cavetto mullioned fenestration with hoodmoulds, including a 3-light window on the upper floor, although some windows have been blocked or altered. A ridge-mounted chimney with two diagonal shafts features moulded caps.
The north side has two gables, with the left gable having a roll-moulded parapet and a former porch at the centre. Each gable has single-window fenestration, with the upper floor of the left gable featuring 2 and 3-light recessed cavetto mullioned casements under a combined hoodmould. The other windows are mostly 2-light, except for the upper floor of the right gable, which was formerly 3-light but has been altered with an inserted doorway leading to a single-storey flat-roofed addition.
Inside, the building retains much panelling and features a fine fireplace in the ground floor room. There is a Jacobean staircase with turned balusters and openwork finials, which may be a partial 19th-century copy. The roof construction includes extended collar trusses.
