Description
Haywardsend Mews is a former barn that has been converted into a coach house, now consisting of two houses in a row, part of a school. It dates from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid 19th century. The building is timber framed with some brick rebuilding, a brick chimney, and a stone slate roof. It is a single-storey structure with an attic.
At the west side, most of the exterior is made of 19th-century brick, featuring scattered segmental arched windows, primarily from the 20th century, and a large segmental arched coach doorway with plank doors located to the right of the center. There are five gabled eaves-mounted attic roof dormers with 20th-century casements and a large ridge-mounted brick chimney. The north end has a small framed gable with a rubble limestone plinth, brick infill, and small brick pigeon holes situated between diagonal bracing at the apex. On the east side, there are segmental arched 20th-century windows and four gabled roof dormers. Inside, much of the timber framing remains, although it has been extensively altered during the conversion to houses.
