Description
The Spring Head and Pool, located approximately 150 meters west of The Stables, is a significant historical feature dating from around 1750, possibly designed by Thomas Robins. The spring head is an alcove made of dry-stone squared limestone rubble, featuring an arched recess that measures about 2 meters wide and 0.80 meters deep. This alcove is supported by walling that is approximately 4 meters wide and 2 meters high, with an unfinished top. Water from the spring flows into a stone trough that leads to a small oval basin. From this basin, water is piped to a pool that measures about 5 meters by 3 meters, constructed in ashlar with weathered copings and an inlet recess at the north end, all contained within a brick enclosure measuring about 7 meters by 4 meters. Between the edge of the pool and the larger enclosure, there are remnants of what may have been column bases. The pool features steps for entry, with 2 steps above and 4 steps below the water level, as well as a series of brass rings arranged in a 2:2:1 pattern, although one ring appears to be missing. This feature is part of a group of garden elements that contribute to an important surviving rococo ensemble.
