Description

The terrace walls and gazebo located to the north of Sevillowes were built in the late 18th century and are made of ashlar and coursed rubble limestone. The structure features retaining walls that create terraces on three levels, with the upper level housing a gazebo. The gazebo has a curved gable, a central ogee doorway, and flanking windows designed in the Gothick style. Above the doorway, there is an ogee quatrefoil panel, and on either side, there are round arched niches. The terracing has an irregular arrangement that bends at the center, with various flights of stone steps providing access to the different levels. Part of the upper terrace has been rebuilt in brick and includes a row of three round arched recesses with keystones. On the lower level, there are two round arched recesses, one of which contains a small oven and flue at the back. Additionally, one arch on the lower level has been infilled to create a small room with a doorway and a small side window. The terraces were used for setting up cloth drying racks, and the recesses were likely used for storage during inclement weather. This arrangement is considered the best example in Chalford and served as a garden for the clothier.
