Description
Rowland Hills Almshouses are a row of almshouses dated 1887, located on Tabernacle Pitch in Wotton-under-Edge. The building features smooth rendered walls, some timber framing, and a battened rubble stone plinth at the end pavilions, topped with plain tile roofs. This long, narrow row is arranged in three units that step down the slope of the ground, providing continuous open balcony access to the single-storey units. The façade consists of fifteen bays arranged in a complex rhythm, with a series of gables, some of which display open framing. The balcony rail includes cross bracing and standards that support the gables, all presented in simple chamfered sections.
The windows are wood casements arranged in three lights with a transom, featuring glazing bars only in the top section of the first window. The doors are simple four-panel designs. A plaster wall tablet with decorative scrolls is located in the gable end facing the street, commemorating the 1887 rebuild of the original foundation from 1815. The replaced building is now known as Streamsfield.
