Description

Bencombe is a large, detached dwelling dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a stone slate roof. The house has an L-shaped plan, with a three-gabled north-west front, and a large service wing returning to the left. The main front is three storeys high and four windows wide, with two of the gables being "false" gables. It features two-light stone ovolo-mould mullion casements under a continuous drip mould to the ground and first floors, and upright elliptical blind oculi in the gables. A two-storey porch is located in the centre of the left side, with a two-light mullioned casement above a 17th-century plank door. To the side of the main building, a single three-light window and two modern casements with a glazed oculus are visible. The two-storey return wing, with attics, has smaller casements and a modern entrance opposite the kitchen stack. A single four-light mullioned window is present on the left gable, facing the north-east side, overlooking the kitchen.

Inside the main gabled block are ovolo-mould stopped beams. The house contains a fine fire surround with a cartouche bearing the date 1670 and a fireback inscribed "IAP 1688", and a second fire surround with a heavy bolection mould, also dated 1679. The entrance is from the porch to a lobby opposite a stack, with evidence of a former newel staircase, which has since disappeared.

Bencombe was originally built as one of the houses for the Uley clothiers. It was later divided into three dwellings and subsequently modernised into a single property.
