Description
The Gables is a large detached dwelling dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of squared and coursed limestone, with rubble on the return gable to the right, and features stone slate roofs. The building has a three-gabled front facing the road, with return gables at each end. It was likely built in two stages, beginning with a single gabled unit on the right. The property has two storeys and an attic, with one window in each gable, and a configuration of 2+2+1 windows on the first floor and 1+2+1 on the ground floor, all of which are modern casements set under wooden lintels. There is a modern door located in a stone porch on the right gable.
Inside, there is an early 18th-century staircase featuring turned balusters, square newels, and a heavy handrail with a straight moulded strip, located in the right-hand gable. The interior also includes a large open fireplace with plain stone cheeks, a second fireplace and bread oven at the service end, and a newel stair. The original roof structure remains intact. Additionally, there is a notable three-panel moulded door within an architrave. This former clothier's house has been significantly modernised but still retains many original details.
