Group Five Memorials, Including Robert Hughes, Circa 3 Metres East of Wall of Chancel to Parish Church of St George

This listing describes a group of five memorials located approximately 3 meters east of the east wall of the chancel of the Parish Church of St George. The memorials are arranged in a north-south line and are about 1 meter apart from each other.

The first memorial is a chest tomb from the late 17th century made of limestone. It features a thick moulded top, a splayed base, and lyre ends, with various crude carvings, including trophies, a skull and cross-bones, and agricultural implements. There is a rectangular sunk panel, but the inscriptions are not legible.

The second memorial is also a chest tomb from the late 17th century, made of limestone. It has a thick moulded top, a moulded base, and carved decoration, with a square sunk panel, but the inscription is not legible. This tomb is located immediately north of the first memorial and is of a similar design.

The third memorial is a chest tomb from the early 18th century, made of limestone. It features a thick moulded top, a moulded base, and lyre ends, with some rectangular panels that have decoration, although the inscriptions are not legible. At the time of the survey, it was covered in ivy and is located immediately east of the north-east corner of the chancel.

The fourth memorial is a tall chest tomb from the early 18th century, also made of limestone. It has a moulded top and a cavetto base, with plain quarter balusters and a moulded surround to a raised panel, but the inscriptions are not legible. This tomb was leaning and invaded by ivy at the time of the survey.

The fifth memorial is a chest tomb from the early 19th century, featuring a plain edged top and three-quarter reeded corner columns. It is dedicated to Robert Hughes, who died in 1809. This tomb was leaning and covered in ivy at the time of the survey and is the northernmost item in the group.
