Description
The Gardner and unidentified monuments are located approximately 12 metres west of the gateway to St Mary's Street in the churchyard of St Mary's Church. The first monument is a chest tomb, possibly from the early 17th century, made of limestone. It features a flat table with a moulded edge, heavy lyre ends, and a flared cavetto base. The north and south sides have 20th-century replacement fielded panels. An 1879 survey identifies this tomb as belonging to Daniel Gardner, dated 1603, although its design appears to be from a later period, and the inscriptions have now disappeared.
The second monument is a headstone from the 18th century, also made of limestone. It has a modelled top with cherub husk drops and a sunk panel, and it lies about 4 metres west of the chest tomb.
