Description

The John Cook monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard approximately 14 metres north of St Peter's Chapel at the Church of St Mary. It dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century, although it features an inscription for John Cook, Clerk of this Parish, dated 1830. The tomb is made of limestone and has a thick top with a plain chamfer edge and wide lyre ends. The eastern end displays a cartouche, while the western end features an angel holding an open book. The north panel is adorned with bold bolection moulding and supporters, and the south panel has drapes and a poorly carved cherub head. Some lettering is present, including the 1830 inscription, but the monument is likely much older, probably from the 17th century. It is set on a cyma base and is a notable example of an early lyre chest tomb.
