Description
Old Bournstream House is a detached house largely of the late 16th century, with significant alterations in the late 17th century. It is constructed of roughcast on limestone rubble, with ashlar copings, brick chimneys, and a stone slate roof. The building is arranged as a two-storey house with an attic and cellar, formed as an L-plan with an addition in the angle. The front features a two-storey porch with a gable surmounted by ball finials on both the front and sides. The doorway has a 20th-century door, above which is a leaded cross window, and the gable incorporates a stone sundial plaque. Oval windows are set into each side wall of the porch. Large parapet gables, each with ball finials, flank the porch; the left gable has a 20th-century attic casement with a rectangular recess above, and the right has a leaded attic casement. Leaded cross windows are located on the upper floor, with five to the left of the porch and four to the ground and upper floors to the right of the porch. 20th-century replacement windows are present on the ground floor to the left of the porch. The east end has two parapet gables with ball finials. The gable to the right projects forward, and features two leaded cross windows to both ground and upper floors, as well as single timber mullioned attic casements with recessed areas above. An off-centre leaded upper-floor casement is positioned in the left gable, with a 19th-century attic casement above. The rear has two gables to the left, one belonging to the late 17th-century staircase hall addition. A single gable is situated to the rear of the main range on the right. The west end displays 20th-century casements. Inside, there is a fine late 17th-century staircase with barleysugar balusters. The plaster ceiling of the staircase hall depicts the sun, moon, and stars, featuring a central wreath with delicate petal decoration. Most beams have bar stops. The attic is lofty and has an extended collar roof. The house is set behind a late 17th-century garden wall with gatepiers.
