Description
This pair of gatepiers, located opposite The Cottage, dates from the mid to late 18th century and likely originates from a former house that no longer exists. They are constructed from rusticated dressed stone at the bases and feature moulded cornices. Each pier is topped with very large egg-shaped finials that have "egg-cups" adorned with a stylized fluted acanthus design. The entire structure stands approximately 3.5 meters high. The inside face of each pier includes an applied niche that runs the full height of the pier, featuring a small shell at the top and tapering to a scroll moulding.
