Description
Two Loveday monuments are located approximately 6 meters north of the north aisle in the churchyard of St Mary. The first monument is a circular pedestal tomb from the late 18th century, made of limestone. It features a deep moulded domed capping over a moulded cornice, with a frieze decorated with rosettes on the east and west sides. The tomb has deep scrolls in high relief depicting cherubs' hearts, and raised panels with decorative surrounds on the north and south sides. The base is moulded and supports a platform shared with the second monument. Some lettering remains on the north and south sides, including the name John Loveday, dated 1805, on the north side. The south inscription is not legible but is likely to have been earlier.
The second monument is an oblong pedestal with segmental ends from the mid-18th century. It has a flat table with a moulded edge and quarter balusters at the corners. The west end features high relief cherubs, while the east end has remnants of an inscription. The north side is a plain sunk panel, and the south side has a well-crafted cartouche, all resting on a moulded base and platform shared with the first monument and two other monuments that are not of special interest. The panel on the east side records John Loveday, dated 1873, but a survey from 1879 indicates John Loveday, 1750, which is more appropriate to the design.
