Description

A row of five town houses built around 1820 for Edward West. The houses are constructed of Flemish bond red brick with painted random rubble to the rear, brick chimneys, and a Welsh slate roof. They are three storeys high, with a three-storey rear wing attached to number 2.

The front elevation features sash windows: three-window arrangements are found at numbers 2 and 10, while numbers 4 to 8 have two windows. All windows have gauged brick flat arches. The ground floor sashes at numbers 2 and 10 are 16-pane, while other ground and middle floor sashes are 12-pane. The upper floor sashes are a mix of 6 and 9-pane designs. The central doorways of numbers 2 and 10 have open, pedimented designs with attached Tuscan columns, featuring 6-panel fielded doors within round-arched openings with fanlights above. Numbers 4 to 8 have simpler doorways with Regency ironwork porches to the left of their ground floor sashes. A moulded eaves cornice is present at number 2. Ridge-mounted chimneys are visible. The south east end of number 1 has off-centre sashes mirroring the front elevation. An archway connects to number 12 Parsonage Street. The rear wing of number 2 is rendered and has a hipped roof, and generally mixed fenestration with timber lintols, including a tall round-arched design. Interior details are not known, but panelled shutters are visible behind the front sashes. The row of houses is locally known as The Crescent due to its gentle curve. The buildings contribute significantly to the townscape.
