Description
Hollis House is a former detached house, now used as offices, dating from around 1840. The front is built of Flemish bond red brick, while the ends and rear are made of coursed limestone rubble. It features brick chimneys and a stone slate roof. The building is three storeys high, with a two-storey projection on the east end. The front has a two-window arrangement, with all windows featuring keyed stone wedge lintels and segmental-arched intrados. The ground floor has tripartite plate glass sashes, while the middle and upper floors have 19th-century casements. There is a central doorway with a 20th-century brick enclosed single-storey porch, and an attached lean-to that projects forward to the left. The ridge-mounted gable end chimney stacks are notable, and the west end has scattered segmental-arched casements, along with a small leaded attic casement that has a timber lintel. The east end features an off-centre hipped-roofed projection. The rear has scattered segmental-arched casements, and exposed flue brickwork runs up to two eaves-mounted chimneys, although the left chimney has been removed. The interior was not inspected. This building was the first home of the Dursley Agricultural and Commercial Grammar School, founded by Canon George Madan and Sir George Provost. It serves as an important architectural feature at a bend in the street.
