Description
The gateway to the south of Elmore Court is a carriage and pedestrian gateway with flanking walls and piers, dating from the early 18th century, while the flanking walls are from the mid-19th century. It was created by William Edney, a blacksmith from Bristol, for Sir John Guise at Rendcomb. The structure features wrought iron and lias stone walls. The central carriage gateway has fixed panels on either side and single-leaf pedestrian gates, with curved flanking walls that end in piers.
There are three pairs of open-work piers, each pair larger than the last, all resting on stone bases. The inner two pairs have scroll-work and are topped with a cyma moulded cornice and open-work urn-shaped finials on scrolled pedestals. The carriage gates display a fern leaf cartouche in the upper panel, and the fixed scrolled frame has a cornice that continues from the inner piers, forming the base of a scrolled overthrow that features a monogram surmounted by the swan badge of the Guise family. The flanking wall piers have ball finials, each adorned with a Celtic cross. The wall extends to the right of the gateway, ending in a stone pier topped with a ball finial and iron railings. This gateway was originally removed from Rendcomb and re-erected at its current location in the early 19th century.
