Description

Oak End Cottage is a timber-framed house, originally two dwellings, dating from the 16th century with a later 17th-century back wing. The house has a variety of infill materials, brick chimneys, and a replacement concrete tile roof. The front section of the house is a two-room, single-storey building with an attic. The rear wing, forming a T-shape, has a single room with a cross-passage and two storeys. The front has small framing with scattered windows; an off-centre plank door and two casement windows are present. The east gable end features a pair of crucks, partly hidden by weatherboarding at the apex, with painted brick to the ground floor. There is a plank door to a small opening, dating from the building’s use as a shop, and a single small-paned casement window above within the timber framing. The west end has been mostly rebuilt in brick with a projecting brick chimney stack. The east side of the small-framed back wing has scattered windows, including a canted timber-framed oriel window on the upper floor. The south gable end is brick with a projecting brick chimney stack and a brick lean-to addition. The west side is small-framed with altered but framed-up scattered 20th-century windows. Inside, further crucks are found in the front part of the house, and some original wattle and daub panels remain. A single-storey weatherboarded addition to the west of the front is not of special interest.
