Description
The Cox monument is a hexagonal pedestal tomb located approximately 22 meters west of the west tower of the Church of St Mary in Painswick. It was erected in memory of John Cox, a clothier, in 1770 and is made of limestone. The tomb features a very flat pyramidal top with a moulded edge over a plain frieze. The inscription panels are raised and shaped, and it has a cavetto-mould base on a step. Much of the lettering remains legible, with the earliest inscription dating to John Cox in 1770, and additional inscriptions continuing until 1860.
To the north, set into the stone paving, there is a series of engraved plates, the most recent dating from 1970. One of these plates records the ages at death of seven children: 6 months, 1 hour, 4 years, 22 years, 21 years, 24 years, and 19 years. Additionally, an engraved plate located immediately east of the tomb base provides information about those commemorated on the monument. While the design is simple, it notably captures a 200-year span of history in Painswick.
