Description

Abbey Farmhouse is a detached house dating from the mid-17th century, with later 19th-century window replacements. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with flush quoins, and has a stone slate roof with three gable stacks, some brick and some stone. The house is a typical Cotswold cross-gabled design, featuring a central two-storey porch; a lower wing was added later to the left gable.

The road-facing front elevation has two full gables and three windows, with three-light stone mullioned windows to the ground and first floors, and two-light windows in the gables. A single light is located at the first floor to the left of the porch. The upper level of the porch has a two-light stone mullioned window. All windows have iron casements, leading, and are contained under stepped hoods with pointed heads to the lights. A lower, flush wing extends to the left, featuring 20th-century two-light over three-light casements in one bay. The central doorway in the porch has a steep, pointed arch with a chamfered surround, which extends only to the front wall. The inner door is plank and nail-head with an early lock and a cross-battened back.

The rear of the building is similar to the front, with two gables, but with blocked windows in the gables. At the centre of the first floor is a two-light wood casement with leading, and on the ground floor are a two-light wood casement with pointed heads, a hooded recessed chamfer, and a three-light window as found on the front. The extension has a two-light over three-light wood casement.

The entrance hall has a stone flagged floor and retains some chamfered beams. An old iron hand pump remains in the kitchen. The house is a splendid example, situated high above the lane and overlooking the Slad Brook Valley.
