Description

Vatch House is a detached house, largely dating from the early 19th century but incorporating fabric from the 17th century. It is constructed of coursed and squared limestone with large flush quoins, and has concrete tile or Welsh slate roofs. The house has a complex, accumulative layout comprising a main L-shaped front block and two parallel rear wings, the upper of which has a gable facing the road. The front features wings set at right angles, each with a large central gable with kneelers.

The house is two storeys and has attics, with windows arranged as 1, 2 or 3 lights. Stone mullioned windows are provided, the pattern being 1 over 2 over 3. The mullions are chamfered on the right and moulded with cusped tracery on the left. A later porch is situated in the internal angle of the front block. A stack is present on the left gable. The rear of the left wing features two-light, pointed windows with Y-tracery, including a large stair light. A small wing, set back and with an embattled parapet is located far to the right.

A three-storey block, originally with three windows, now having steel casement windows, is located in the rear left wing, likely from the 17th century. A length of boundary wall is located along the road at the higher end of the site. It contains a Gothick door with a pointed head and extends approximately 10 metres, varying in height from 3.5 metres to 2.5 metres.

The interior includes two roof trusses constructed with heavy members and chamfered arch-like bracing. The first floor features one chamfered beam with a bar stop, and a transverse beam to curved brackets. A main ground floor room on the right includes parallel walls and a compartmental ceiling. Window shutters are also present.
