Description

Knapp House is a large detached house dating to the late 16th or 17th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a stone slate roof. The original building was arranged in an L-shape, with a return to the roadside. This section features two coped cross-gables. Behind and to the right is a coped gabled parallel range extending part of the width, and adjoining the road is a second unit, similar in style but taller, with a roof that sweeps down to form a lean-to. The front elevation, facing the valley, has two and a half storeys and three windows. It features two- and three-light hollow chamfer stone mullioned casements with stopped hoods. A 20th-century plank door is centrally located, with a four-light casement to the right. The roadside gable extends beyond the hipped return of the main block and has two, three, and then three-light casement windows. At the rear, the range to the left is two storeys high and has two windows with three-light casements. The main block repeats the fenestration of the front elevation, with gables at the far end, away from the road, featuring single or two-light casements. The wing by the road has a two-light window over a three-light window on the ground and first floor, and two single-light windows in the swept extension, alongside a plank door beneath a chamfered, square-headed opening with a deep lintel. Most windows have arched heads to the lights and feature leading with carved sink triangular spandrel details. The building has one gable and three ridge stacks. The interior has been substantially modified.
