Description

Hazel Mill is a detached dwelling, dating to the late 17th century, with significant alterations in the 18th century and later. It is constructed of Cotswold rubble, originally rendered, with a stone slate roof to three coped front gables. There are several rebuilt stacks, including two previously external to the rear gables, now incorporated into later additions. The building follows an L-shaped plan, with one long arm running parallel to the main road, which may have been a service wing or barn. Within the L-shape are two later gabled extensions at the rear. The house has two and a half storeys and three windows. Original windows include nine-pane over twelve-pane sash windows, with an additional sash window above the front door, and three flat-roofed, canted bays with eight-pane, twelve-pane, and eight-pane sashes. A 20th-century door is located between bays two and three, beneath a three-pane transom light. Late 20th-century plastic-coated casements have been inserted into two of the south-facing gables. A two-light chamfered mullion casement is found in the far gable, along with a two-light hollow chamfer mullioned casement facing the road. A 19th-century V-plan stone-roofed oriel window is also at this end of the building. At the rear, two two-light reserve chamfer mullioned casements are situated beneath stopped drips. The interior has been substantially modified and includes various beams with spade-stopped chamfers, and several beams suspended on iron brackets above the windows. The name "Hazel Mill" originates from an early 18th-century small cloth mill, which was situated nearby on the stream, and is not a building of special interest.
