Description

St. James' Parish Centre, originally built as a national school in 1833 with a late 19th-century addition, is located on Silver Street in Dursley. The building features coursed rubble limestone with ashlar dressings, tile hanging, and brick at the rear, topped with Welsh slate and plain tile roofs. It is a single-storey structure with a two-storey addition at the south end.

The front of the building is symmetrical, highlighted by a central gabled parapet that projects forward. This gable includes a moulded Tudor-arched doorway with 20th-century glazed doors and a sign fascia above. A plaque in the gable reads 'NATIONAL/SCHOOL/1833'. On either side of the doorway are two 2-light casements featuring diagonal leaded glass and Tudor-arched heads with hoodmoulds. The right wing has later 19th-century casements beneath half-hipped half-dormers.

At the north end, there is a low-pitched parapet gable with two segmental-headed casements, while the south end is tile-hung and features a central timber-framed bellcote gable with a casement below. The open ground floor has a central cast-iron pillar supporting a timber beam. The rear of the building has 20th-century windows and a blocked Tudor-arched doorway.

The churchyard wall extends from the southwest corner of the building to a gateway at the top of stone steps leading down into Broadwell, with ball finials flanking a 19th-century spear-topped iron gate. The boundary wall continues along Broadwell and includes a Tudor-arched opening with an iron spear-topped gate. This structure is part of the grouping around the Church of St. James and in Broadwell.
