Description

Nos 56 and 60 Silver Street are two shops with a house at the rear, dating from the late 17th century. They were refronted around 1840 and have 20th-century shop fronts. No 56 features incised stucco and a replacement tile roof, while No 60 is built of red Flemish bond brick with painted stone dressings and also has a replacement tile roof. The rear of No 60 is constructed from random rubble limestone. Both buildings are two-storey with a single-storey outshut at the back of No 60.

The front of each shop has a two-window arrangement, with No 56 having 12-pane sash windows and No 60 featuring six-pane mid-19th century sashes with stone voussoir lintels. There is a central opening beneath the upper floor junction between the properties, leading to a throughway with a complex moulded and stepped 17th-century stone lintel, although the mouldings that originally extended down the jambs have been removed. The rear gable over the throughway has a 20th-century upper floor casement with a timber lintel, and there is a small upper floor casement to the right above a single-storey lean-to. Inside, No 60 contains a late 17th-century (possibly earlier) compartment ceiling in the shop, featuring moulded beams. The buildings hold an important position in the townscape along the curving street.
