Description
Egypt House is a notable example of a cross-gabled Cotswold house, dated 1698. It stands two and a half storeys tall and is constructed of coursed rubble with a stone-tile roof and a central chimney. The building features a chamfered plinth and weathered bands at the ground and first floor lintel levels. There are two attic gables, each with moulded oval lights above the windows. The house has five windows, primarily of the mullion and transom type with ovolo mouldings. The central doorway has a chamfered surround and displays a Sun Fire Insurance Plaque.
To the right, there is a twin gabled return with a central door dated "R(ichard) W(ebb) 1698" on the lintel, flanked by single light windows. The left-hand return features central staircase windows at varying levels, with irregular fenestration that includes a three-light and several two-light mullion windows, as well as basement openings.
Inside, the house boasts a dog-leg staircase with square newels and ball-finials, twisted balusters, a straight string, and a flat handrail with moulded sides. There is an oak door in the stair hall with three raised and fielded panels. The north-east ground floor room has some panelling, while the room above features a bolection fireplace, and the main beam has ovolo mouldings and decorative stops. Egypt House is considered to be an early example of a double-pile house.
