Description
Nos 52 and 53 on High Street is a shop building dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate roof that is concealed behind a parapet. This corner building has three storeys and a rounded corner with three bays, including a blank central window on the second floor. There are two additional bays facing High Street and five more bays facing The Shambles. The second-floor windows are 6-pane sashes, while the first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes. The building has a moulded eaves, cornice, and blocking course. There is a plain stringcourse above the first floor on the High Street front, and Tuscan pilasters on either side of the corner, set on a rusticated basement to the left. The two right-hand bays project slightly. The elevation facing The Shambles features a cornice that ramps down to a lower eaves height on the right bay. The ground floor has late 19th-century plate glass windows fitted into the original openings.
