Description

Ferncroft is a house that has been converted into offices and a shop. It was built around 1820, with a slightly later added wing and alterations made in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of brick with stone details and has a slate roof with brick stacks. It has a single-depth plan and features an end-gabled range with a wing that projects forward from the right side, which has been modified to include a corner shop.

The exterior of the building is two storeys high. On the ground floor, the entrance doorway is centrally located and set back in a semicircular arched opening. This opening has a keystone in a projecting, painted stone frame, topped with an entablature and blocking course. The doorway features a fanlight with radiating glazing bars and a fielded six-panel door. Flanking the doorway are two sash windows; the left window is original with glazing bars (four over four panes), while the right window was replaced in the late 19th century with a sash that has a single vertical glazing bar. On the first floor, there are three sash windows, with the central and right-hand windows having glazing bars (three over four panes), and the left-hand window replaced with a sash that has a single vertical glazing bar.

In the north gable-end of the main range, there is a sash window on each floor, both with glazing bars (three over four panes). The wing features a late 19th-century shop front on the ground floor, with a blocked window opening on the south side. On the first floor, there is a small late 19th-century sash window, and above the shop front in the gable-end, there is another sash window with glazing bars. All window openings are adorned with five raised and stepped voussoirs leading to flat arched heads and have projecting stone sills. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
