Description

St Michael's Gate, also known as the Gate to College Court, Upper College Gate, and Cemetery Gate, is a pedestrian gateway located in the former precinct wall of the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter, which is listed at Grade I. This structure dates from the 14th century and was altered in the 16th century.

The gateway is built of ashlar and brick, with the masonry on the south face showing significant weathering in places and capped with lead. It continues to function as an entrance into the south-east corner of College Green from College Court. Despite its weathered condition, the south front of the gateway is richly decorated, featuring moulded jambs and a shallow basket arch. Above the arch, there are remains of a shallow gablet with a finial and lower parts of blank panels, along with remnants of canopied niches on either side of the arch. At the first-floor level, there is a small 18th-century wing that projects over the gateway and is part of 1 College Green, which is separately listed at Grade II.
