Description

3 College Green is a house, now used as offices, built around 1740 for Elizabeth Palmer. It has undergone early 19th century and 20th century alterations. The building is constructed of red brick with stone details and features a slate roof. It is a double-depth block with a rear wing to the left and a small enclosed rear yard.

The exterior is three storeys high with a basement and has wrought-iron railings. The front facade consists of three bays, topped with a stone modillion crowning cornice and a brick parapet with stone coping. The entrance doorway is located on the ground floor to the left, accessed by a flight of three stone steps. The doorcase is in the Roman Doric style, flanked by half-columns, dosserets, and an open pediment that frames a semicircular fanlight with intersecting glazing bars. To the right of the doorway are two sash windows. On the first floor, there are three similarly sized sash windows, all featuring glazing bars (3 x 4 panes). The second floor has three short sash windows with glazing bars (3 x 2 panes). All sash windows are set in openings with rubbed brick flat arches and projecting stone sills.

Inside, on the ground floor, the room to the right of the entrance hall has a fielded panel dado, panelled shutters, and an Adam style chimney piece. There is an early 19th century open-well staircase with open strings, column newels, stick balusters, and a toad-back handrail. Some 18th century joinery can be found in other rooms.

Additionally, there are 18th century wrought-iron front area railings with urn finials.
