Description
House. This building incorporates a 16th or early 17th century structure that was considerably enlarged and remodelled in 1807. It is constructed of brick, partly faced in ashlar and stucco, with timber-framing mostly concealed behind later surfaces. The roof is slate with dormers and two brick chimney stacks.
The plan consists of a double-depth main block with a wing at the rear to the right. The wing is the remaining portion of the Sexton's House, which originally faced east and now overlooks a walled garden at the rear of the main block. Between the south end of the wing and the south flank of the monastic precinct wall stands a short portion of a longer timber-framed range, now partly enclosed within the wing.
The exterior of the main block is two storeys and attics with a cellar below. The front is symmetrical and faced in ashlar, comprising five bays with a slight projection to the central bay. It features an offset plinth, a band at first-floor level, a frieze band and crowning cornice with parapet above, and raised quoins at the outer angles. The central bay contains a wide entrance doorway with a semicircular arched head and a batswing-pattern fanlight with metal glazing bars. Three stone steps lead to the threshold, and the doorcase features three-quarter Roman Doric columns, dosserets and an open pediment, with a six-panel door (two by three panels) with the upper four panels fielded. The ground-floor sashes have glazing bars (three by four panes) on either side of the entrance, and the first floor has similar sashes with the central sash set within a basket-arched recess. All openings have flat-arched heads with projecting sills. Three roof dormers with segmental curved roofs contain sashes with glazing bars (three by two panes).
At either end of the main block, shaped and coped gables support stacks with crowning cornices and ceramic chimney pots. The east gable-end wall is stuccoed on the ground floor, with the stone band at first-floor level continued from the front; the wall is brick above. On each floor to the right is a single sash matching the front sashes; on the first floor to the left is a blocked window recess.
The rear wing is two storeys and attic. On its east side, the three southern bays of the former five-bay front of the Sexton's House are now faced in stucco with a timber crowning cornice. On both floors are sashes with glazing bars (three by four panes), and there is a roof dormer.
The interior features a large central hall and an open well staircase to the rear with open string, curtail step, shaped tread-brackets, fluted stick balusters and a mahogany wreathed and swept handrail. Doorways have reeded architraves with corner blocks carved with paterae. The drawing room to the left has early 19th century joinery, a moulded plaster cornice with decorative ceiling frieze, and panelled shutters. The room to the right has a plainer moulded cornice. The principal room on the ground floor in the rear wing retains mid-17th century small panel panelling and a late 17th century fireplace with a surround of fielded panels and a raised keyblock in the lintel.
From the first floor to the attic is an early 17th century dog-leg staircase with moulded closed strings, turned balusters and a toad back handrail. The first-floor room at the east end of the main block has early 19th century joinery. Over the timber-framed bays at the south end of the rear wing is a double purlin roof with chamfered purlins and inserted collars. Doors in the attic are made up from salvaged 17th and 18th century panelling.
In the late 17th century, this building served as the Sexton's House.
