Description
60 and 62 Westgate Street is a commercial building with residential space above, dating from the early 19th century. Number 60 was largely rebuilt in 1947, with early 21st century alterations.
The building is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof, brick chimney stacks, and timber sash windows. It has a double-depth plan with a canted angle at the street corner and stands three storeys high, including a cellar and attic. The slate roof has two spans and dormer windows, which were partly added during the post-war renovations when the corner facing College Street was extensively rebuilt. There are two early 19th-century brick chimney stacks.
The ground floor has a modern glazed shopfront with timber panels and a recessed entrance that wraps around the elevations facing Westgate Street and College Street. Above this, pilaster strips are located at the corners of the canted angle and between the second and third bays on the Westgate Street elevation, extending to the full height of the building and reaching the parapet, which features a stone band that continues around the entire elevation. On the upper floors, there are three sash windows on the Westgate Street side, one sash window on the canted angle, and one on College Street; all of these windows have six-over-six panes with glazing bars.
The interior has been altered on the ground floor, but it is believed to contain features such as an early 19th-century staircase in other areas.
