Description

17 College Green is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and late 19th century. The building has a timber frame, rendered brick, and an end-gabled slate roof with hipped roof dormers, along with a brick stack at the rear. It is a single-depth, end-gabled structure built against the west side of the former wall that separated the lay and monastic cemeteries.

The exterior features two storeys and an attic. The timber framing at the first-floor level may be hidden by render and is underbuilt in brick. The outer roof slope is raised, as indicated by the timber framing in the north gable. On the ground floor, to the left, there is an added flat-roofed projection with a crowning cornice. The right side of this projection has a six-panel door with the upper four panels glazed, and to the left are two sash windows with glazing bars in the lower frames. To the right of the projection, there are two similar sash windows and a band at the first-floor level.

On the first floor, in the centre, there is a sash window and to the left, another sash window, both with glazing bars (3x4 panes). To the right is a late 19th-century three-light casement in a projecting timber frame, and there are two dormers, each with a pair of casements. In the north gable-end wall, there is a central large timber-framed panel inserted in the late 19th century, which contains a pair of sash windows at ground-floor level and another pair of similar sash windows at first-floor level. Between the lower and upper sashes, there are four small framed panels with decorative diagonal bracing. The gable reveals the original framing, including a collar tie and queen posts enclosing rectangular panels, with diagonal struts in the angles.

The interior has no noted features of special interest from a partial inspection, and 16th or 17th-century features are concealed under later work.
