Description

Drakes House is a large detached dwelling, formerly known as The Sloop Public House, dating from the 17th century. The building is rendered and has a roof covered in composite slate tiles. It features a gabled block with a central porch and end stacks, along with a late 20th-century garage extension on the left side. The house is three storeys high and has four windows, although three are located under the eaves. Most of the windows are 2 or 3-light casements, with one notable 3-light stone mullioned window with leaded glazing on the first floor to the right, and a cross mullion and transom window above the porch. The east gable, facing the railway line, has two large new plate glass openings. The porch has a heavy plank door on strap hinges and retains some original fittings within a broad double ovolo frame.

Inside, there is an oak newel stair that returns over the entrance door, and the first and second floors feature very good plank and muntin partitions. The ground floor boasts heavy 16th-century beams, some of which are moulded and others stop-chamfered. There is a large open fire with remnants of a bread oven beneath a very deep bressummer on the left gable. Additionally, there is a 4-light ovolo moulded timber casement window on the first floor at the back. The roof has been raised.
