Description
Byways and Heather Cottage are two dwellings dating from the 17th century. They are constructed of painted rubble and have a glazed double Roman tiled roof. The buildings form an L-shaped block, with the main range raised from and parallel to the main street. There are large gable stacks, one rendered on the left and one of stone on the right.
The cottages are two storeys high and have three windows. On the ground floor, there are two 3-light casements with plain stone drips and stops, along with one 2-light casement with bars. The first floor features two 2-light windows above a 3-light window, plus one new small one-light window. In the right gable, there is a small square fixed light under a plain stone drip, and a modern door is located far left. Heather Cottage is situated in the return wing on the right.
The interior is plain but includes a stone newel stair, which is now concealed, beside the main stack on the right gable, as well as a concealed bread oven. The building features moulded beams with cavetto and cyma profiles.
