Description
The cowhouse and stable at Mantley House, likely built in the mid-18th century, features a front and left return made of flat stone with larger quoins at the corners on the ground floor. Above this, the structure is weatherboarded timber-framing, with a corrugated iron roof. The building is three rooms long and has a loft.
On the left return, there is a blocked window on both the ground floor and loft. The front has a boarded door on the left and a three-light open window with diagonally-set square bars between the mullions and a flat head, but no lintel. There is also a three-light window, originally glazed, that has replaced a door and has no lintel. To the right, there is another boarded door with large quoins on the left jamb and a blocked opening above it. A three-light window and another boarded door are also present, with a timber-framed wall on a low stone plinth beyond.
Inside, the left room contains a trough and rack, while the center room has a timber partition on the left, which was originally faced by animals, and a stone wall on the right with a cupboard recess. This building is a rare survival and forms an unusually complete group with the house and barn nearby.
